Wardriving Results San Francisco

In April, 2015, we observed an increase in Open networks, which we attribute to Comcast's XFINITY which has added a large number of new open networks in San Francisco.

The next one will be Sat., April 25, 2015, 9 am, SCIE 200

If you have one, bring a car and/or a laptop. If you don't have those things, come anyway!

Recommended wardriving equipment is a laptop with Windows 7 or 8 and Vistumbler:

You can use some other device or software, but test it first and make sure you can find out how many networks you find and sort them into these categories:

  • Open
  • WEP
  • WPA
  • WPA-2
Some loaner netbooks will be available for students without equipment.

Kismet

If you are using Linux, you can use Kismet. It's more complicated than Vistumbler, but more powerful. Here's a friendly tutorial (we don't need the GPS function):

You do need to find a way to get the output into a spreadsheet so you can determine how many networks are using No encryption, WEP, WPA, or WPA-2.
