I looked through Microsoft and Apple's current offerings (as of 10-18-2015) and my conclusion was:
Microsoft's Surface line is only worth getting if you value using your laptop as a tablet, or using Windows.
Note: the Surface 3 tablet looks like a real bargain if you want something better than an iPad but less than a real laptop.
