CNIT 131 Bowne HW 11
Researching Power Tools for the Internet
25 Points Maximum
Topics
Choose a specific product from one of these categories:
- Alternative browsers (not Internet Explorer)
- Download managers
- Firewalls
- Media players
- Pop-up stoppers
- Web accelerators
- Spyware cleaners
- Browser toolbars
- Other Internet topic (confirm it with me before doing the assignment)
Research that product -- if possible download it and try using it yourself.
However, do not download software on CCSF computers without the permission
of the faculty monitor of the computer lab first. Most labs do not permit
students to download and install software -- ask FIRST. You do not have
to download and install software to complete this assignment.
Then write a short (about 1 page) report summarizing your results. Your report
must contain these elements:
Requirements
- Give the name of the product you are researching, and the URL of a
Web site that it can be downloaded from.
- What does the publisher of the product claim that it will do?
- What is one good thing you expect this product to do for you?
- What is one bad thing about this product -- something it won't do,
or some harm it will do?
- What really happens when people use the software? You can fulfill this
requirement either by trying it yourself and writing a paragraph about your
experiences, or by finding online reviews written by customers.
- You must write at least one paragraph of original writing in the
report -- usually that will be the paragraph describing your own
experiences with the software.
- If you use text, images, or any other content from a Web site, you must
give that site credit. I will deduct points if I find things on your
page that are copied from Internet sites without giving them credit.
- You may turn the report in either as a printout, by e-mail, or posted as
a Web page.
